Tom Molineaux, an American slave from Virginia, fought his way out of bondage, literally. After winning his freedom, he moved to New York to make his name in the sport of boxing. Upon becoming the self-proclaimed “Champion of America,” Tom Molineaux would move to the United Kingdom in hopes to take on the UK champion, Tom Cribb.

A controversial fight, Tom Molineaux gave Tom Cribb everything he could ask for and more.

In 1811, the two fought for a grueling 35 rounds. After Tom Cribb was hurt, his corner called for an inspection of Tom Molineaux fists. This gave Tom Cribb time to recover and eventually defeat Tom Molineaux.

The crowd, however, saw Tom Molineaux as the hero. The two would rematch but Tom Cribb was more than prepared. He managed to finish Tom Molineaux in only 11 rounds. Unfortunately, Tom Molineaux would only live to the age of 34. After a life hard with slavery, boxing and drinking later in life, he would pass away in Ireland fighting for pints.
